Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The ES 350’s aluminum 3.5-liter V6 produces 272 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and
254 lb.-ft. peak torque at 4,700 rpm. The chain-driven camshafts employ Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) for optimal performance and efficiency at all engine speeds.

The six-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) provides a sequential manual shift feature for a more involved driving experience when desired. Shifting strategy adapts to driver input, with rapid kick-down response.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The ES 350 owes its smooth, quiet ride in large part to a rigid unibody structure that allows the four-wheel independent suspension to be tuned to provide responsive handling agility and ultra-smooth ride quality. The low 0.28 coefficient of drag (Cd) helps minimize wind noise while also helping to maximize highway fuel efficiency. Standard 17 x 7-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a new split five-spoke design carry 215/55R17 all-season tires.  A full-size spare wheel/tire is available.

Standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control system integrates the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist (BA) safety feature.  A new VSC cut-off switch for 2010 is useful if it becomes necessary to extricate the car from deep snow or other difficult conditions, such as mud or sand.

Safety/Security Features
A reinforced front- and rear-structure passenger compartment forms the foundation for passive safety in the ES 350.  In addition to advanced dual-stage front airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System includes rear seat-mounted side air bags (previously optional, now standard), side-curtain airbags that extend from the A-pillar to C-pillar and a knee airbag for both the driver and front passenger, for a total of 10 airbags throughout the cabin.

2010 Lexus ES 350 04

The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead.  The multi-information display within the combination meter will show a car icon with the selected following distance.

If, based on a variety of inputs, PCS determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system preemptively retracts the front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal. Active Braking can automatically apply the brakes up to a deceleration rate of 0.3 g if the driver fails to react to system warnings.

The optional dual-swivel Lexus Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) helps illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it. A medium-to-high speed mode (over 19 mph) allows both the right and left front headlamp bulbs to swivel toward the direction of the turn at the same time.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
Lexus’ craftsmanship and attention to detail provide true luxury by design in the ES 350. Standard leather-trimmed seating is available in three colors. For 2010, the Ultra Luxury Package adds double-contrast stitching for the seats, console and door trim, a feature seen in prestige-luxury models, and perforated, semi-aniline leather.

A one-touch tilt/slide power glass moonroof is standard, as well as a dual-zone automatic climate control system, 10-way power front seats (with standard driver memory) and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

The standard multi-information display, located in the combination meter, is easy to operate.  Its main feature is a trip computer that provides outside temperature, driving range, fuel consumption and average speed readouts. A new Eco Driving indicator helps encourage economical driving.  The display also includes an oil maintenance reminder and system warnings.

The standard leather-trimmed steering wheel integrates easy-to-use controls for the audio system, trip computer, and multi-information display, as well as voice control for the available navigation system when so equipped.  The standard auto-dimming rearview mirror features an integrated digital compass. Heated exterior mirrors help melt away morning fog or frost, and an illuminated entry system lights the interior foot wells and the exterior with puddle lamps.

The SmartAccess keyless entry and push-to-start ignition system allows the driver to enter and start the car without needing to remove the access fob from pocket or purse. The standard HomeLink® transmitter can control compatible garage-door openers and home-security devices.

Convenience details abound throughout the ES 350, including illuminated front cup holders and an interior lighting system.  Using the new Lexus Memory System feature, the driver can now tailor numerous vehicle preferences, including lighting, power windows and moonroof, steering wheel, and door lock control.

The standard Lexus Premium Audio system includes an in-dash, six-disc CD changer, Automatic Sound Levelizer and an integrated satellite radio receiver (complimentary 90-day trial subscription included). New for 2010, the system adds iPod®/USB connectivity, Bluetooth® hands free phone capability and music streaming.

Luxury Options
The customer can “layer” luxury in the ES 350 by adding the Ultra-Luxury Package, or by selecting from a number of standalone options which include heated and ventilated front seats, HID with AFS, and Intuitive Park Assist (IPA). The IPA system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car’s front and rear bumpers, alerting the driver and showing distance to objects in the multi-information display.

The available touch-screen Lexus Navigation System with rear back-up camera, revised for 2010, allows the driver to enter a destination using the updated Voice Command casual-language voice recognition.  The system integrates control for the Lexus Personalized Settings feature and adds Bluetooth® phonebook download.  Voice command, a casual-language-based voice recognition feature, is standard on navigation-equipped vehicles.  This new technology allows the driver to give fewer and more flexible, conversational commands in a specific order for easier access to audio, climate, and navigation system functions to help drivers focus more on the road ahead.

The optional Mark Levinson® Premium Audio System is available in conjunction with the navigation system. This leading-edge design uses 10 channels of amplification with 300 watts total output at only 0.1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The system plays through 14 speakers in a 7.1-channel surround sound speaker architecture. The Mark Levinson system can play conventional CDs and DVDs, and MP3-formatted CDs. DVD movies can be viewed on the navigation system’s color seven-inch touch screen when the car is in park and the parking brake is engaged.

The Ultra-Luxury Package includes a panorama glass roof; perforated semi-aniline leather-trimmed seating (new Black/Saddle color combination for 2010); power rear sunshade; passenger memory; the HID/AFS lighting system; and a wood- and leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob. Exclusive Liquid Graphite-finish 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels add a distinctive touch.

Interior Design
Built on a 109.3-inch wheelbase, the midsize ES 350 provides a roomy and inviting interior. The driver and passengers are treated to intelligent, elegant luxury, with touch points that convey quality and controls that respond fluidly.

The high level of Lexus craftsmanship is immediately evident in the ES 350, with bright, clear Optitron® gauges, premium wood, as well as polished metal and leather accents that echo prestige-luxury models. For 2010, Parchment leather replaces Cashmere; new Walnut trim replaces Medium Brown Walnut, and Dark Brown Bird’s Eye Maple trim is added.

Lexus LF-Ch Premium Compact Hybrid Concept to Make North American Debut at 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show

· Visually Striking Compact Hybrid with Dynamic Design Philosophy

· Dramatic and Modern Interior Complements Innovative Hybrid Drivetrain

· Driving Enjoyment Paired with a Sustainable Focus
TORRANCE, Calif. (Sept. 9, 2009) – Lexus today announced the LF-Ch compact hybrid concept, which will have its world premiere on September 15, 2009 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, will be on display for the first time in North America at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show in December.
Lexus LF-Ch 12
As the latest concept hybrid vehicle from Lexus, LF-Ch offers dramatic style, premium features, an innovative drivetrain with low emissions, and impressive fuel economy in a sporty yet versatile five-door package.

“Lexus has been leading the luxury hybrid market ever since we came out with the RX 400h in 2005,” said Mark Templin, Lexus division group vice president and general manager. “To continue raising the hybrid benchmark, we need to continue exploring hybrid technology in different segments. The LF-Ch concept gives us the opportunity to gauge consumer reaction and help us determine whether or not this would be viable for production.”

The LF-Ch concept was designed by Calty Design Research Inc., Toyota’s North American-based research and design center located in Newport Beach, Calif., and will allow the brand to study the needs of young urbanites and consumer values in a compact luxury vehicle.

“The LF-Ch concept is the next evolution of the compact luxury vehicle,” said Kevin Hunter, president of Calty. “We were able to create a beautifully designed hybrid with a deep sense of mystery and intrigue.”
Lexus LF-Ch
Designers created an intriguing contrast between the powerful, machine-like surfaces, fluid forms and details that appear hand-sculpted.

The exterior of the LF-Ch concept exudes strength and simplicity with a wide stance, broad and high-shoulders, an arching roofline that flows into the rear spoiler, and sheer surfaces wrapped in a contemporary yellow paint. To give the sporty five-door concept the illusion of a sleek coupe, designers cleverly blackened the B-pillar and hid the rear door entry button in the chrome molding.

An aggressive grille with a wide front bumper and air dam gives the hybrid concept a powerful personality in keeping with its dynamic lines. Efficient and bright LED taillights and headlamps also add to the vehicle’s personality. The concept is marked with hybrid details including its blue Lexus logo, which is shared across the Lexus family of hybrids, and hybrid side badging.
Lexus LF-Ch 08
Inside, designers created an elegant cabin that is contemporary, and functional with metal and leather trim. Metal surfacing stretches the length of the asymmetric dashboard and blends with leather trim to provide a luxuriously handcrafted and soothing environment. The artistic leather, and metal detailing is also visible on the door panels, instrument panel and seats.

A blue headliner light, that borders the roof and contrasts with the yellow exterior, turns on to reveal an ambient pattern reminiscent of a sophisticated lounge. A wide grip steering wheel with integrated paddle shifters makes for a spirited driving experience. The instrument panel features two, large twin dials with a uniquely embellished turbine blade design.

The LF-Ch is powered by the latest generation of Lexus Hybrid Drive technology. A drive mode-switch allows the driver to select between four modes: Normal, Eco, and EV plus a Sport mode that amplifies throttle response for the most enthusiastic drivers.

Lexus’ Remote Touch controller with user-adjustable haptic feedback, also currently found on the 2010 HS 250h hybrid and RX luxury utility vehicles, allows the driver or front passenger to operate the navigation, audio and climate systems.

The LF-Ch has four sport seats that feature trim lighting along the cushion’s edge for cabin illumination. Rear passengers can enjoy headrest-mounted iPhone® docking capability for audio and video entertainment. In addition, the LF-Ch has storage in the rear seat armrests for small items such as iPods®, PDAs and cell phones.

“We look forward to hearing feedback on the LF-Ch,” said Templin. “We hope consumers like what they see so we can change the luxury hybrid marketplace again.”

Lexus Launches ‘HS250h’ in Japan

Tokyo, July 14, 2009 — Lexus announces the launch in Japan today of the “HS250h”*1, its first dedicated hybrid model.

Based on the brand’s core principle of “pursuing the essence of luxury”, Lexus aimed to develop a luxurious “harmonious sedan”, hence the “HS” in the vehicle’s name.  The result is a car that not only exists harmoniously with Earth and people but also exudes the high quality for which Lexus is renowned.

Specifically, the HS250h combines outstanding driving performance with a hybrid-system-achieved 23.0km/l*2 fuel efficiency, which is exceptional for a premium sedan.  A concerted effort has also been made to use Ecological Plastic, a plant-based plastic that reduces environmental impact, for interior parts and components.  Further, the cockpit environment has been designed to lessen the need for physical movement or switching visual focus, thus allowing the driver to concentrate fully on the task of driving.  These are among the advanced features that make the HS250h a new breed of premium sedan.

Lexus plans to introduce the HS250h in North America in September.

Premium sedan with outstanding fuel efficiency, environmental performance and related technologies

Fuel efficiency and environmental performance
The HS250h features a hybrid system combining a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle combustion engine with an electric motor and a reduction gear, realizing a fuel efficiency of 23.0km/l, which is exceptional for a premium sedan.  Also, by delaying intake valve closure, the engine achieves a high expansion ratio at low pressure, thus raising heat efficiency.  Under the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) JC08 test cycle, the HS250h has a fuel efficiency of 19.8km/l.  The vehicle meets new 2015 Japanese fuel efficiency standards set out under the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy, and CO2 emissions are 75% lower than the 2005 standards under the MLIT approval system for low-emission vehicles, which is currently the strictest standard in Japan for emissions.  The HS250h thus qualifies for incentives under the Japanese government’s taxation system for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The vehicle features a total of four switch-engaged driving modes, including the standard mode designed to balance requirements for both high fuel efficiency and power.

  • Eco Mode improves fuel efficiency by optimally aligning driving force with accelerator operation and putting air conditioner into low-energy-consumption mode
  • Power Mode allows more agile driving with outstanding acceleration performance by increasing output response level to accelerator operation
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Drive Mode uses electric motor only for extremely quiet cruising

The Hybrid System Indicator and Eco Driving Indicator give visual support for environmentally considerate driving.

*Using both engine power and electric motor power (based on TMC calculations)

The transaxle is exceptionally small and light, with a compact high-speed motor that achieves increased output and a reduction gear that increases torque.

An exhaust heat recovery system uses exhaust gas to heat the engine, thus shortening engine-warming time and contributing to greatly improved fuel efficiency, especially when outside temperatures are low.

Special glass blocks roughly 30% of infrared rays, keeping interior temperatures from rising and thus reducing the need for air conditioning.

LED headlights, taillights and stoplights conserve electric power and consequently reduce power-generation requirements on the engine.

The vehicle is fitted with the recently developed Harmonious Driving Navigator, which awards points for environmentally considerate driving that can then be used, for instance, to make donations to a charity.  This system creates a fun way to encourage drivers to drive in an environmentally considerate way.

  • Through linkup with advanced telematic service G-Link*3, navigator assesses driver’s degree of compliance with and proficiency in environmentally considerate driving
  • Donations from earned points go to projects registered with “Project Mirai Isan” (future heritage project) of National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan*4, run by civic groups to preserve cultural and natural assets of local communities

Environmental impact reduction
Plant-based Ecological Plastic has been adopted for the first time for the luggage-space trim surface.  The wide range of applications for this material includes the scuff plates, toolbox, other injection-moulded parts and the foam material used in the seat cushions.

  • Ecological Plastic—carbon-neutral*5—emits less CO2 during product’s lifecycle (from manufacture to disposal) than plastic made solely from petroleum, thus also reducing dependence on petroleum
  • When used in vehicle interiors, Ecological Plastic displays same level of heat-resistance and shock-resistance as conventional petroleum-based plastics

Recycled plastics have also been used innovatively, thus further reducing environmental impact.

TMC employed its Eco-Vehicle Assessment System (Eco-VAS)—its original system to comprehensively assess environmental impact.  Eco-VAS includes setting targets at the start of vehicle development to help reduce environmentally harmful factors by such means as the balanced reduction of CO2 emissions.  A life-cycle assessment was carried out to reduce air contaminants and CO2 from the vehicle throughout its lifecycle.

Careful consideration of the materials, processing methods and adhesives used for interior parts reduced volatile organic compounds and unpleasant interior odors to levels compliant with voluntary industry standards.

Aerodynamic design and ergonomic cockpit

Exterior
The design, based on the L-finesse*6 concept, pursues the advanced image worthy of a dedicated hybrid model, combining occupant comfort with aerodynamics that contribute to outstanding fuel efficiency.

  • Interior cabin is relatively long compared to overall vehicle length, achieving both spacious interior and image that conveys vehicle’s advanced hybrid nature, with long cabin proportions integral to Lexus identity
  • Resolute expression presented by grille set low relative to LED headlights is basis for new front image that incorporates grille arrangement designed for aerodynamic efficiency and devised for previously shown Lexus hybrid motor-show models
  • Vehicle’s axial line at vehicle shoulder height, extending from front to rear of side profile, and unique C-pillar-corner “arrowhead” profile are hallmarks of Lexus
  • In rear, vehicle’s sides are tapered and shoulders are drawn in to produce slant, giving distinctive look of stability while also contributing to aerodynamic performance
  • Ten body colors—of depth and beauty that only Lexus can provide—are available

Aerodynamics
The shaping of the side silhouette, front grille, front and rear bumpers, rear fenders, and other exterior parts were aerodynamically designed, allowing the vehicle to achieve a class-leading 0.27*7coefficient drag value.

  • Front pillars are positioned forward, while rearmost portion of roof is gently sloped, resulting in excellent aerodynamics
  • Upper part of grille presents solid surface that blends into hood, while opening of lower part of grille is set low into bumper to improve air intake
  • Sides of front bumper have plane surface to direct airflow along body, while front spoiler and rear bumper spoiler also streamline airflow, reducing turbulence and lowering air resistance
  • Edges of rear-combination taillights and spoke profile around rims of 17-inch aluminum wheels have been shaped for optimal aerodynamics
  • Underfloor covers across large sections under vehicle body create smoothness, while addition of aerodynamic fins to rear underfloor covers ensures excellent maneuvering stability

Interior
Along with its elegance, the interior design achieves an ergonomic cockpit that combines high levels of visibility and operability to create an advanced driver-oriented space.  A clear distinction is made between the information-filled Display Zone and the function-control Operation Zone, resulting in a cockpit layout that allows the driver to concentrate on the task of driving.

  • Position of navigation screen, which displays maps, air-conditioning and audio-system information, and other data, is optimized to reduce need for shifting visual focus
  • Heads-up display allows driver to view various information, such as speed, lane information and warnings, without need for excessive eye movement
  • “Remote Touch” system allows driver to operate on-screen cursor with fingertips and is optimally positioned on center cluster that has distinctive “floating” profile, symbolic of its advanced operational feel; together with steering-wheel-mounted controls, reduces need for driving-posture changes
  • Touch Tracer feature on heads-up display shows which part of steering switch fingertips are touching
  • Shift lever, conveniently located right next to steering wheel, is operated by “electro-shiftomatic” system (shift-by-wire system), requiring minimal driver effort

The shaping of the door trim, which matches the floating profile of the center cluster, along with the fine-grade, artificial leather finish on both sides of the center cluster and on the meter hood, is designed to convey a cutting-edge image and a high-quality feel.

There are 10 interior color schemes available, including the eye-catching “Black and Camel Yellow” and the newly developed, futuristic “Water White”.

Hybrid-specific items
To highlight the vehicle’s advanced nature, the “Lexus hybrid blue” color is apparent in the front and rear logo, as well in the headlights, rear-combination taillights, Remote Touch panel, meter display and other exterior and interior fittings.

Highly practical Intelligent Package and range of useful features

The vehicle’s Intelligent Package provides a spacious cabin and ample luggage room, while also ensuring forward visibility and ease of ingress and egress.

  • Slightly elevated hip point contributes to forward visibility
  • Optimized positioning of doorways and seats creates ease of ingress and egress
  • Slimmer front seatbacks allow more legroom at knee height for increased rear comfort and ease of ingress and egress
  • Optimization of shape and position of hybrid-system battery secures enough luggage space to accommodate four golf bags*8

The hard-disk drive navigation system features an 8-inch pop-up display that, together with the Remote Touch feature, achieves a high level of both visibility and operability.

A 10-speaker Lexus HS Premium Sound System that produces a dramatic expansion of the sound field comes standard.  Also available is a 15-speaker Mark Levinson® premium surround-sound audio system that aims to create a clearer and richer audio environment.

Plasmacluster®*9 air-purifying technology with a negative ion generation function, fills the cabin with air that has an equal ratio of positive and negative ions and helps prevent the propagation of airborne germs, mold and bacteria, thus contributing to the creation of a stress-free cabin environment.

The vehicle features a ventilation system that reduces seat and seatback surface temperature of the front seats.  This allows greater driving comfort, thus reducing need for air-conditioner use, and through this, improving fuel efficiency.  There is also a front seat heater that effectively warms the shoulders and legs to save on electric power.

High-quality driving

Intensive spot-welding in areas such as the doorways and floor, bonding of the front suspension tower and the cowl and other enhancements throughout the vehicle produce a high-rigidity body with outstanding handling and stability.

In addition to the high-rigidity body, use of vibration-damping suspension members and effective placing of vibration-reducing and soundproofing materials raises the high level of quietness that typifies a hybrid vehicle.

Optimization of the suspension geometry, adoption of highly responsive shock absorbers with rebound springs and other measures make for superior straight-driving stability and cornering, while at the same time providing a smooth, high-quality ride.

The vehicle is fitted with a newly developed, compact electric power steering (EPS) system.  Electric assist features enable fine control in line with vehicle speed, thus realizing a feeling of direct steering control from low to high speeds.

Outstanding safety performance

A Pre-crash Safety System and other advanced technologies, combined with the provision of up to 10 airbags contribute to outstanding safety performance.

  • Pre-crash Safety System (featuring millimeter-wave radar) employs eye monitor to detect whether driver’s eyes are properly open, while also determining direction of driver’s face; if risk of accident is determined, system warns driver with buzzer and automatic braking
  • If risk of collision from vehicle approaching from behind is determined by Pre-crash Safety System, hazard lights flash to warn driver; if collision is highly probable, system shifts headrests to optimum position to brace passenger for impact and lessen risk of injuries
  • Both front seats come standard with Active Headrest, which shifts headrests to appropriate position to lessen stress on neck and reduce risk of whiplash injury sustained during rear-end collision

Customers Vying for Drives of New Lexus HS 250h Hybrid

TORRANCE, Calif. (July 9, 2009) — The 2010 Lexus HS 250h, which will be available later this summer, is the world’s first luxury car available with only a hybrid engine. It will be a driving experience like none other, and customers are hoping to win some time behind the wheel in the DriveHS.com promotion.

Customers are posting their profiles and a statement about why people should vote for them on DriveHS.com, then encouraging their friends, family, and even strangers, to vote for them. The top vote-getter will get a one-year lease of a HS 250h, a weekend at a Fairmont Resort and a Lexus Hybrid Living gift package. The other top 100 vote-getters will get a week-long drive of the HS and a Lexus Hybrid Living gift package.

Additionally, every person who submits a vote will be entered into a random drawing to also win the use of an HS for a year.

“There’s no other luxury car like the HS 250h hybrid and we know that people who get behind the wheel will be amazed by its innovation, luxury and sustainability,” said Dave Nordstrom, Lexus vice president of marketing. “This promotion is an opportunity to introduce people to the HS and it gets them excited about the possibility of driving it.”

To showcase the promotion, Nordstrom is featured in a video on DriveHS.com that explains the promotion, urges customers to sign up, and gives some tips on how to generate votes. Some of the ideas include hosting a voting party, joining facebook.com/lexus to do some campaigning, and posting a video on YouTube.

Response to the contest has been strong, with the winners being determined when the contest closes July 31.

New Off-Road Racing Team Relishes Test after Personal Ordeal

PHOENIX, May 7, 2009 – Joe Bacal is no stranger to difficult challenges. He has successfully driven the notorious Rubicon Trail without incident, for one. Surviving Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer was a much larger test. Now he is taking on the more interesting challenge of racing a Lexus LX 570 in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 this June 5-7. He wants to win this one, too.

Backed by the company that helped him regain his health, the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Bacal’s newly-formed JTGrey Racing team began preparing a new Lexus LX 570 for racing duty in February, with plans to contest several additional Best in the Desert series races in 2009 and 2010. The LX will compete in the Stock Full/4100 class and is expected to be the first Lexus SUV to be raced off road.

“It may seem unusual to race a large luxury SUV in the desert, but I’ve worked quite a bit with Lexus vehicles and frankly, I think I’ll have an advantage,” said Bacal, owner of JTGrey Racing. “Lexus SUVs are capable and extremely durable—both key factors in successful off-road racing.”
