JAGUAR LAND ROVER PLANS A GREENER AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS FUTURE

Jaguar Land Rover today confirmed a new business plan designed to increase its global competitiveness significantly, drive growth and sustained profitability, and respond to the challenges of climate change.

The plan includes decisive actions to see through the next 12-18 months as markets recover and positions the company to grow and prosper in the future. It includes a new and expanded range of products and environmental technology, delivered through streamlined and competitive costs and a new manufacturing strategy.

Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer, David Smith said: “This is a plan that recognises the impact the economic collapse has had on our business, and at the same time the opportunities that lie ahead for these two great brands. We are confident that a new more efficient and competitive structure combined with future investment will unlock the true potential of this business.”

The car industry has been through an unprecedented recession. New car sales, including those of Jaguar and Land Rover, are down globally by 25-30 percent. This has resulted in manufacturing capacity utilisation of less than 60 percent at Jaguar Land Rover, which combined with the credit crunch, has exposed fundamental weaknesses in the structure of the business.

The company has already responded with aggressive actions over the past year. Production was reduced by more than 100,000 units; spending and costs were cut; employment reduced by 2500; and pay frozen and bonuses cancelled. But this was not enough to offset the full magnitude of the downturn and the company swung from profit in 2007 to significant losses over the past 12 months. This was not a sustainable situation. Actions taken have started to reverse the trend quarter over quarter and we now have to take the company to the next level of competitiveness.

The new plan identifies global competitive benchmarks. These recognise that Jaguar Land Rover has to match if not beat the levels of cost and efficiency achieved by competitors that manufacture in multiple locations around the world.

The new strategy addresses both medium and long-term plans, but has an acute focus on the next year. Actions across the business fall into two main categories:

Improved products and environmental performance
Both brands’ portfolios will expand through a series of exciting new segment entries that build on Jaguar and Land Rover’s design, performance and technology excellence. In addition, a new generation of lightweight sedans, sports cars and premium SUVs, with hybrids and electrification technology will significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2. Some ?800 million has been dedicated to environmental innovation, which will in part be supported by European Investment Bank funds. Finally, there will be additional derivatives and powertrain variants from core model lines.

The new plan includes a production version of the LRX Concept which will be the smallest, most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever. It will be built in the world-class, multi-award winning Halewood plant in Liverpool, subject to quality and productivity agreements.

Cost competitiveness for sustained growth
As the company reduces engineering complexity for its new product range, West Midlands manufacturing will transfer from two plants to one by the middle of the next decade, improving efficiency and cost. Further cost reductions include pension restructuring, lower employment costs for new hires and a focus on IT and business simplification. Volume growth, especially in emerging markets, combined with low-cost country sourcing will also reduce variable cost. The entire package of measures does not envisage any compulsory redundancies.

This plan of action will restructure the company and deliver positive cash and profits that are essential to re-invest in the business and secure its future.

2010 Jaguar XKR comes to Frankfurt

Jaguar’s 2010 XKR sports coupe was part of the British manufacturer’s showstand at the Frankfurt IAA International Motor Show, which opened to the media on September 15, 2009. As part of the new Jaguar ‘showroom, the 510PS supercharged V8 sports car shared the stage with the award-winning XFR saloon and stunning new flagship, the XJ Supersport.

“Built in the tradition of great grand tourers, with state-of-the-art engineering, aerospace-inspired construction and outstanding driving dynamics, the 2010 XKR is the latest in a long line of legendary performance Jaguars.”
Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

With advanced 5-litre V8 engines delivering more power and performance with greater efficiency, even more dramatic looks, interior enhancements, advanced lightweight aluminium body structure and a wider range of models, the 2010 XKR and naturally aspirated XK models build on 60 years of legendary performance to deliver the best of everything Jaguar.
01_jaguar_xfr_xj_xkr_8f69
The combined efforts of Jaguar’s designers and engineers have produced a sports car that utilises advanced technologies at a higher level than ever before. The benefits of the XK’s lightweight but stiff and strong chassis are already acknowledged. Not only does this architecture bring dynamic benefits thanks to its torsional rigidity, it also offers excellent safety and crash repair features and provides the ideal base to improve performance across the board – including optimised fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
02_jaguar_xfr_xj_xkr_85ee
The AJ-V8 Gen III engines are the most advanced and efficient Jaguar has ever produced. They deliver significantly more power and torque than the previous generation of engines: 510PS and 625Nm in the new supercharged XKR and 385PS and 515Nm in the XK models.

With the introduction of these 5.0-litre direct-injection V8 engines comes a new level of performance for the XK, with improved acceleration from standstill and stunning in-gear acceleration times. All models are electronically limited to a maximum speed of 155mph (250kph), but the 0-60mph sprint for naturally aspirated coupe models is now 5.2 seconds (previously 5.9 seconds), while for the supercharged XKR coupe, 0-60mph is 4.6 seconds (previously 4.9 seconds).
In-gear times are equally impressive, with the naturally aspirated XK accelerating from 50-70mph in just 2.5 seconds, while the supercharged XKR completes the same sprint in just 1.9 seconds.
03_jaguar_xfr_xj_xkr_648b
And yet thanks to a combination of excellent powertrain efficiency and the XK’s advanced lightweight body architecture, all XKs offer strong fuel economy and impressive CO2 emissions ratings. Fuel economy is comparable to the previous generation of XK – despite the significant increases in power and performance – and CO2 emissions from each engine are better than previous 4.2-litre versions.
“With a supercharged AJ-V8 engine and dramatic new looks, the XKR has all the performance, power and panache that you expect in the ultimate sporting Jaguar.”
Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

Allowing the engines to optimise their power is one of the most sophisticated transmissions available. Jaguar’s acclaimed electronically controlled, six-speed ZF 6HP28 transmission offers an unparalleled combination of driver control matched to virtually undetectable gearshifts. With control either from steering wheel-mounted paddles or full automatic mode via the JaguarDrive Selector™, the transmission is now paired with an advanced electronic differential on the XKR model. This ensures the supercharged car accelerates even faster, handles even more precisely and sets new standards of dynamic control.

There are three core models in the XK range: the XK, the highly equipped XK Portfolio and the supercharged XKR, each with its own sporting character. In addition to the many changes under the skin, the latest XKs are visually different to the previous generation. Each still looks just like a Jaguar should look – seductive, powerful and elegant – but all 2010 models, coupe and convertible, benefit from revised exterior styling that underlines Jaguar’s contemporary thinking on design.

Inside, quality levels are raised even further with new interior trim and finishes that demonstrate Jaguar’s craftsmanship, plus even more comprehensive specification. The driver is the centre of attention, with exciting technologies, including the acclaimed JaguarDrive Selector™, Adaptive Dynamics (the latest in computer-controlled suspension) with Active Differential Control and comfort features such as heated and cooled seats – taking the driving experience of the 2010 XK range to even higher levels of luxury alongside the improved performance.

“The 2010 XK range delivers more power, more performance and more technology – without compromise. It moves the Jaguar sports car experience on to a whole new level.”
Mick Mohan, Director, Jaguar Programmes

JAGUAR CREATES A LUXURY SPACE FOR THE ALL-NEW XJ IN KNIGHTSBRIDGE

The all-new Jaguar XJ will take Knightsbridge by storm this autumn with the opening of a unique luxury viewing room at the Berkeley hotel.

Owned and managed by Maybourne Hotel Group, The Berkeley is situated in Knightsbridge, in the heart of London’s luxury shopping district, making it an ideal home for one of the world’s most luxurious brands. The Berkeley will play host to Jaguar’s new flagship model until December this year.

Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Jaguar Cars, said: “Creating this unique space is part of an ongoing relationship between Jaguar and Maybourne Hotel Group. This new relationship between two thoroughly modern, yet quintessentially British, brands, represents another key element of our innovative marketing plan for the all-new XJ.
XJ 01
“By creating this contemporary space in such a prime London location, we will not only be able to entertain potential XJ customers from the UK, we can reach a huge number of foreign business men and women who make The Berkeley their hotel of choice when visiting the city. Potential customers will have to wait until the end of the year before this new model will be in Jaguar dealerships, making this extended visit to The Berkeley a great opportunity to view the car in the metal.”

Stephen Alden, Maybourne’s Chief Executive Officer said: “The spirit of The Berkeley culture is built around all aspects of exquisite innovation and Jaguar’s XJ model captures this same essence. Our venture together is a natural match and we are delighted with the partnership.”

The ‘look and feel’ of this Jaguar space is consistent with the approach taken by the brand at the Saatchi Gallery for the XJ’s global reveal event which took place in July.
XJ 02
Mike O’Driscoll added: “Sleek, sporting and sophisticated, the all-new Jaguar XJ brings a daring new spirit to automotive luxury – it offers a seductive mix of striking design, breathtaking performance and engineering without compromise.”

Building on the success of the new XK and XF models, the introduction of the all-new XJ is a landmark for the revitalised Jaguar brand. Clearly positioned as the company’s four-door flagship, it extends the appeal of the XJ to a new generation of customers.

Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Design Director, was named ‘Person of the Year’ at the 2009 Auto Express Awards, commended for the stunning new XJ and for making Jaguars incredibly desirable and stylish once more.

Jaguar XJ

“The all-new XJ re-imagines the ultimate sporting luxury car. It’s beautiful, exhilarating to drive and with a bold, enlightened approach to design meets the challenges of our fast-changing world.”
MIKE O’DRISCOLL, MANAGING DIRECTOR, JAGUAR CARS

Sleek, sporting and sophisticated, the all-new Jaguar XJ brings a daring new spirit to automotive luxury. It offers a seductive mix of striking design, breathtaking performance and engineering without compromise.
Jaguar_XJ 01
The new XJ is the epitome of fluid, contemporary automotive style. The elongated teardrop shape of the side windows establishes the car’s silhouette and lies at the heart of its flowing design. And the new XJ doesn’t just look streamlined: it shares a drag coefficient of 0.29 with the XF saloon, making them the most aerodynamic Jaguars ever.

A coupe profile cloaks a cabin that offers comparable levels of space to saloons with a more conventional style. There is generous accommodation for five occupants, while long-wheelbase models provide rear-seat passengers with even greater levels of comfort thanks to an additional 125mm of rear legroom.

The exquisitely designed interior has a strong sporting character throughout. A panoramic glass roof, standard on all models, dramatically enhances the sense of light and space inside the new XJ. And in keeping with its status as the ultimate four-door Jaguar, the XJ introduces a new generation of interior technologies, pioneering the use of display and infotainment systems such as the innovative Virtual Instrument dials and optional 1200W Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system.
Jaguar_XJ 03
At the heart of the all-new XJ’s construction is a next-generation application of Jaguar’s unique lightweight vehicle architecture. Primarily aluminium – but also utilising magnesium and composite alloys – it allows Jaguar to produce a significantly lighter and stiffer body – the lightest in its class. The new structure – which retains the same aerospace-based riveting and bonding processes – has been refined using these advanced new materials to deliver improved strength, enhanced refinement and superior safety performance.

The new XJ offers the choice of four powerful and refined engines, which use the latest powertrain technology to deliver an outstanding combination of performance and class-leading efficiency. The supremely powerful supercharged 510PS 5.0-litre AJ-V8 Gen III will head the line-up, with a 0-60mph time of 4.7 secs (0-100kph in 4.9 secs); 470PS supercharged and 385PS naturally aspirated petrol V8s are also available, dependent on market.
Jaguar_XJ 08
A no-compromise diesel alternative is provided by the formidable 275PS 3.0-litre AJ-V6D Gen III. With twin sequential turbochargers, this is an engine that delivers on every aspect of the Jaguar driving experience, marrying tremendous drive (0-60mph in 6.0 secs, 0-100kph in 6.4 secs) with impressive fuel economy and CO2 emissions (40.1mpg and 184g/km of CO2).

The all-new XJ delivers a driving experience that is just as memorable as the car’s appearance. Benefitting from technologies pioneered on the exciting new XFR and XKR models, including continuously variable damping (Adaptive Dynamics), electronically controlled rear differential (Active Differential Control) and a quick ratio power-steering system, the new XJ combines responsive, sporting dynamics with the refined, supple ride expected from a luxury Jaguar.

With its unique lightweight aluminium body structure and advanced new powertrains, the all-new XJ already has a head start when it comes to sustainable performance. The aluminium body uses more than 50 percent recycled material, with a plan to increase this to 75 percent. Body panels made from recycled material use only 5 percent of the energy required for new aluminium, equating to a potential saving of three tonnes of CO2 per vehicle.

“The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar. Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car’s side windows, a powerful stance and wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.”
IAN CALLUM, DESIGN DIRECTOR, JAGUAR CARS
