COLOGNE, January 12, 2010 – The Ford Fiesta, Europe’s No.2 best-selling car, has set yet another record at Ford’s Niehl Plant in Cologne, Germany. No other Ford vehicle manufactured in Cologne has ever reached the half million production mark within only 17 months of production.

Since production of the latest generation Ford Fiesta started in August 2008, half a million units have been built in Cologne.  On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the 500,000th new Ford Fiesta rolled off the production line.   Given the current extreme weather conditions in much of Europe, the 500,00th vehicle was appropriately a Frozen White three-door Fiesta with a 1.6 litre petrol engine (88 kW/120 PS) and is destined for a customer in the UK.

Every day, the Ford Niehl plant with its 4,300 employees from over 50 countries, produces 1,885 Ford Fiestas.  In 2009 alone, 350,470 Ford Fiestas were built at Cologne.  Around 80 per cent of the plant’s total production of all its vehicle lines is exported.

Close to 600,000 new Ford Fiestas have been sold around the world since the car was launched late in 2008, with 526,000 cars being sold in Europe alone.  As well as being Europe’s No.2 best-selling car, the new Ford Fiesta is Europe’s top-selling small car, and Ford’s best-selling model in Europe.  The car has also won over 70 major accolades from around the world.

In addition to the Niehl Plant in Germany, the new Ford Fiesta is also built at Ford’s manufacturing plant in Valencia, Spain.  Nearly 170,000 new Fiestas were built in Valencia during 2009.

Since the Ford Fiesta nameplate was launched in the mid-1970s, over 12 million have been sold, making it one of Ford’s best-ever selling vehicles.
