Birthday at work for Montezemolo

Maranello 31 August 2009 – The present has been prepared yesterday at the Spa circuit by Kimi Raikkonen and the Scuderia, handed over today symbolically at the traditional work meeting, which is usually held at the GeS logistics hangar after a win. “We didn’t have a meeting like this for too long and now we can finally hoist the colours of the Prancing Horse on the roof of the entrance to the Scuderia,” Stefano Domenicali said, underlining another tradition, which usually is kept up after wins on the track by Ferrari. “Yesterday’s victory was the result of the work by the whole team and we want to dedicate it to our Chairman, who is celebrating his birthday today.”

Montezemolo thanked everybody with the words: “I have to say three times thank you – thank you for this wonderful birthday present, thank you for what you have done and thank you for what you are doing.”

The success in Spa has to be an injection of faith for everybody at Ferrari and a spur to keep the concentration level high, giving always the best and even more: “Just like we ask the drivers to gain that fraction of a second, which can determine victory, every single one of us has to give this extra bit in his or her work, which can make the difference,” Montezemolo said.

After the meeting Montezemolo immediately went back to his office where he had some meetings on his agenda on his birthday at work, while Domeicali and the team are already working for the next race, which will be held at Monza.

Statistics confirm accident research conducted by Mercedes-Benz: Mercedes drivers enjoy better road safety

Stuttgart
,
Aug 31, 2009

Stuttgart – The evidence is now clear: drivers of Mercedes vehicles are safer on the road than drivers of other car brands. This is the result of a study of Mercedes accident research based on official, anonymous data samples from the Federal Office of Statistics. Having looked at 18,748 accidents resulting in personal injury during the period from 2003 to 2007, the study found that the risk of being seriously or fatally injured as the driver of a E?Class, is 10.4 percent lower than for comparable vehicles of other brands.

The study did not even allow for the fact that Mercedes-Benz vehicles are involved in accidents less frequently than the vehicles of other brands – primarily because, among other reasons, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to introduce ESP® across the board. The study of accident severity only took into account accidents resulting in personal injury. The criteria were initial registration from 2002 onwards, as well as a performance and weight class corresponding to the E?Class.

The result represents clear evidence of the contribution made by the passive safety systems of Mercedes-Benz to reducing the consequences of an accident. Thanks to adaptive front airbags and belt-force limiters, which can adapt to the severity of an impact, rollover sensors, windowbags as standard and an intelligently designed body structure which provides occupants with excellent protection even in the event of severe collisions, at the time of its world premiere in 2002 the E-Class became the new benchmark for passenger car safety in the luxury class.

In the course of a facelift of the E-Class in the spring of 2006, the Mercedes engineers continued to achieve further substantial advances in the field of high-level safety, equipping the E-Class with safety systems which no other passenger car in this class was able to offer. At the time PRE-SAFE® was introduced, the interlinking of systems for accident prevention with occupant protection marked the start of a new era in this vehicle class. This Mercedes invention takes advantage of the time between detecting an accident-prone situation and possible accident damage for occupant protection. With the new E-Class, Mercedes-Benz has continued to build on the advances being made in the field of safety. Around a dozen new or enhanced driver assistance systems contribute to preventing accidents and reducing the severity of an impact. These include the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system, as well as the optional DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control system and PRE-SAFE® Brakes with autonomous emergency braking. For the first time, PRE-SAFE® can also make use of information from the short-range radar sensors in the front bumper to tighten the front seat belts in the very last split second before an unavoidable accident, thus helping to reduce the loads suffered by the driver and front passenger in a crash.

With nine airbags as standard, four seat-belt tensioners and belt-force limiters as well as crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints for driver and front passenger, the new E-Class provides an even more comprehensive level of safety equipment than its predecessor. As well as the air cushions, which can be activated in milliseconds in the event of an accident, there are also two adaptive airbags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag for the driver, two sidebags in the front seat backrests, and also two generously sized windowbags which span the area from the A to the C-pillar in the event of a side impact. For the first time, pelvisbags have also been incorporated for the front seat occupants. These can also help to reduce loads in the upper body and pelvic areas in the event of a side collision. Sidebags are also available as an optional extra for the rear passengers, while another safety innovation includes automatic adaptive belt-force limiters in the rear, now available for the first time as an option from Mercedes-Benz. These adjust automatically to the size and weight of the passengers.

TMC, Hino to Test Breathalyzer Ignition-interlock System

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) and Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino) announce that, as part of their efforts to eradicate drunk driving, they will jointly test a breath-alcohol ignition-interlock system* under development by TMC.   The system, aimed to aid companies and organizations better manage their fleet-vehicle operations, will be installed on selected trucks and other vehicles of Japanese transport companies and tested from September 1 to November 30.

The tests will verify system functionality, particularly ease-of-use in real-world situations.  Tests will include drivers conducting self-breath tests before they operate a vehicle and, after vehicle use, fleet administrators monitoring and verifying the test results automatically recorded on the vehicle’s digital tachograph.

The system features a hand-held unit containing both a breathalyzer that can detect alcohol in a small breath sample and a digital camera that photographs the driver’s face for test-taker identification.  If the test result is positive, the system either warns the driver or locks the vehicle’s ignition, depending on the level of alcohol detected.  The system thus prevents drivers from operating vehicles in an inebriated state, while follow-up instructions given by fleet administrators aim to further reduce the possibility of alcohol-related traffic accidents.

In conjunction with the tests to be conducted by TMC and Hino, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism (MLIT) will install the system in a vehicle under lease from TMC and conduct tests during everyday use.
0831_1
TMC and Hino plan to provide results from the testing to an MLIT council on new technologies to prevent drunk driving, while TMC also intends to apply the test results to improving the system.

System-use flow

1.     Before vehicle use, driver uses hand-held unit with breathalyzer to test own breath and take photograph of own face for test-taker identification; results automatically recorded on digital tachograph
2.     If breath-test result is positive, warning is issued or vehicle ignition is locked, with fleet administrators then contacted by driver; safety instructions, such as telling driver to wait, are then given by fleet administrators
3.     After vehicle use, driver provides tachograph data to fleet administrators
4.     Fleet administrators verify records of breathalyzer checks as part of daily vehicle-operation management

World debut: The Fiat Punto Evo makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show

The Fiat Punto Evo, the evolution of the Grande Punto, will make its debut at the next Frankfurt Motor Show. It is destined to repeat the success of its predecessor and become the new pacesetter for innovation, safety and style, thanks to its many innovative features.
Fiat Punto Evo
The epithet “Evo” identifies a level of car design that is capable of satisfying even the most demanding customers in terms of technology, driving pleasure and respect for the environment.

The Punto Evo expresses its technical excellence first and foremost through a wide choice of Euro 5 engines, including a 1.3 second generation Multijet diesel and a 1.4 petrol engine with the revolutionary MultiAir technology developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies and eventually to be incorporated in all Fiat Group engines. Fiat’s innovative and conventional powerplants are also joined by dual-fuel methane and petrol units to create the most complete and ecological range of engines in the segment. With reduced consumption and emissions in mind, the new Punto Evo also offers Start&Stop, the system that switches off and restarts the engine in stop-and-go traffic. Start&Stop is being introduced as standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines. Another system making its first appearance on the Punto Evo is “Blue&Me–TomTom”, the new portable satellite navigation unit that lets you manage telephone, navigation and information functions on a practical colour touch-screen.
Fiat Punto Evo 03
In the area of safety, the Punto Evo sets new standards thanks to 7 airbags, including a driver knee airbag. The Punto Evo is one of very few cars in its segment with a driver knee airbag fitted as standard on all versions. Other innovative safety systems are also available, including Hill-Holder to help with hill starts, adaptive ‘cornering’ front fog lights that switch on automatically with dipped headlights according to the angle of steering, and Fiat’s tried and tested ABS, EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) systems.

Finally, the new Punto Evo is even more attractive thanks to the work of Fiat’s Centro Stile. The interiors (fascia, seats and instrumentation) have been completely renewed to become even more prestigious and elegant, and the outside has been given a thoroughly restyled look too.

The Fiat Punto Evo goes on sale in the second half of October with the precise objective of consolidating its role as one of Europe’s market leaders in the highly important compact segment.

Technical innovation

The Punto Evo expresses its technical excellence first and foremost through a wide choice of engines Euro 5, including petrol units equipped with the revolutionary MultiAir system and second generation Multijet diesels.

Developed and patented by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies – MultiAir technology will gradually be adopted by all engines fitted to Fiat Group cars. The heart of MultiAir is a new electrohydraulic valve management system that reduces fuel consumption by controlling air directly via the inlet valves (without using the throttle). MultiAir reduces emissions (thanks to improved combustion control) and also improves performance by boosting both power and torque.

Similar results have been achieved in diesel versions thanks to the adoption of second generation Multijet units across the range. These engines incorporate new common rail injectors that, thanks to a balanced hydraulic servo-valve, control the quantity of fuel injected into the combustion chamber with improved precision, and in a faster and more flexible sequence than in the past.

The choice of engines available for the Punto Evo is the most complete and ecological in this market segment, and even includes two alternative fuel engines, a methane and an LPG unit.

The new Punto Evo is even equipped with the latest version of the Blue&Me system. “Blue&Me–TomTom” is a fully integrated infotainment system that lets you manage telephone, navigation and information functions on a practical colour touch-screen. The system is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the car’s other systems thanks to the Blue&Me system developed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli. The new system also incorporates “eco:Drive Info” for real time information on your driving style and useful suggestions for reducing environmental impact and optimising consumption by changing gear and using the accelerator to suit the nature of the route.
Fiat Punto Evo 04
Respect for the environment

At Fiat, innovation means greater respect for the environment too. In fact, the environment is one of the main issues driving product development, and ensures that the Fiat range is the greenest in Europe. The Punto Evo is no exception to this rule.

The new MultiAir engines prove the point. Compared to a conventional petrol engine of the same size, a MultiAir engine develops more power (up to 10%) and torque (up to 15%), while consuming significantly less (up to 10%) and emitting less CO2 (up to 10%), less particulates (up to 40%) and less NOx (up to 60%).

In the same way the second generation of Multijet diesel engines also offers more accurate combustion, with benefits for consumption, emissions, NVH and drivability. This has been achieved through a new common rail injector that modulates fuel injection into the combustion chamber and gives, for the Euro 5 engines, an improvement of around 2% in consumption and CO2 emissions on the homologation cycle, and a reduction in NOx emissions of up to 30%.

Still with reduced consumption and emissions in mind, the new Punto Evo will also offer Start&Stop, the system that switches off the engine when you stop and restarts it for you to move off again (at traffic lights for example). Start&Stop will be standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines.

The methane-fuelled engine is not only the most ecological dual fuel engine in segment B, producing only 115 g/km of CO2, but is also the most economical thanks to record running costs of under 4 Euros per 100 km. Among other advantages, methane-fuelled engines benefit from the highest government incentives in Italy: 5,000 Euros if combined with a contribution for scrapping your old car.

Then there is the LPG-fuelled version, developed using Fiat’s longstanding experience in alternative fuels to respond to the extraordinary growth seen in this market. The Punto Evo GPL boasts record autonomy of 1,500 km in the extra-urban cycle, and running costs up to 50% lower than a petrol equivalent.

Safety

The Punto Evo is designed and built to achieve the highest levels of safety. The model boasts a large number of safety systems (standard or optional depending on market and version) starting from those dedicated to passive safety: 2 front airbags, 2 front side airbags, 2 window bags and a driver knee airbag (the Punto Evo is one of the few cars in this segment on which this device is standard on all versions).

The Punto Evo is also one of the few cars in its class equipped with adaptive ‘cornering’ front fog lights that switch on automatically with dipped headlights according to the angle of steering. And don’t forget that the new Punto Evo also guarantees constant and reliable road holding thanks to electronic dynamic control systems for braking and steering. The ABS system that is available across the complete engine range incorporates EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Hill-holder to help with hill-starts.

Style and comfort

The Punto Evo is more stunning than ever thanks to the work of Fiat’s Centro Stile. In particular, the interiors of the new model have been completely redesigned to represent the most evolved expression of Italian style, with top quality materials and superb attention to detail. The result is a bright and elegant cabin with completely renewed fascia, seats, storage compartments and instrumentation.

On the outside, both the front and the rear have been thoroughly restyled, as shown by the attractive lines of the new bumpers and the incorporation of innovative and original headlights and taillights. The latest design has also “stretched” the car to a total length of 406 centimetres, so that its winning characteristics of driver and passenger comfort remain unchanged. The other external dimensions remain the same, with a width of 169 cm, a height of 149 cm and a wheelbase of 251 cm.

Porsche Cayman Acknowledged as “Best Driver’s Car” and “Best Sports Car

Stuttgart. The US car journal Motor Trend has chosen the Porsche Cayman S as the “Best Driver’s Car” of the year 2009. At virtually the same time, the Cayman was also picked by British car journal Auto Express as “Best Sports Car” in their New Car Awards 2009. In both cases Porsche’s mid-engined coup? convinced the test experts in particular through its driving dynamics, precision, feedback and response.

Featuring PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, the Porsche Double-Clutch Gearbox, the Cayman S proved all its strengths in the tests conducted by Motor Trend both on regular roads and the race track, making its way to the top against nine other thoroughbred sports cars. The test team including the two professional racing drivers Massimiliano “Max” Angelelli and Randy Pobst took their decision on the title at the Laguna Seca Race Track in California, lauding in particular the surgical precision of the car’s steering, Porsche’s mid-engine sports coup? thus scoring yet a further title in a most demanding contest.

With its circulation of 1.1 million copies and 7.6 million readers, Motor Trend, an internationally renowned magazine, is acknowledged as one of the leading car journals in the USA.

Auto Express, the British car journal, was equally unequivocal in emphasising that the Cayman dominates the sports car scene with unrelenting efficiency. A guarantee for the coveted title “Best Sports Car” was also the ultimate blend of traction, balance, and agility. Apart from the characteristic sound of the boxer engines, the testers also lauded the practical qualities of the Cayman with its two luggage compartments and large tailgate.
Cayman-01
Auto Express is the best-selling car journal in Great Britain.

The second generation of the Cayman has been in the market since February of this year. Its newly developed six-cylinder boxer engines guarantee best grades in both fuel economy and performance, 320 horsepower delivered by the 3.4-litre power unit interacting with PDK in the Cayman S ensuring acceleration from 0 –100 km/h with the Sports Chrono Package in just 4.9 seconds, together with fuel consumption of 9.4 ltr/100 km (equal to 30.0 mpg imp). Delivering maximum output of 265 hp, the 2.9-litre power unit in the Cayman, again teaming up with PDK, consumes just 9.1 ltr/100 km (equal to 31.0 mpg imp) for even greater fuel efficiency. And it almost goes without saying that both models fulfil the strict EU5 emission standard in Europe and the ULEV standard in the USA.

Contrary to other competitors in the “Best Driver’s Car” competition, the Cayman S also remains below the fuel consumption limit for Gas Guzzler Tax in the USA and is therefore exempted from the special tax imposed on cars with particularly high fuel consumption.
